Year 1: Weekly round up

What a wonderful and busy week we’ve had in Year 1! This week in Math’s we focused on number bonds and doubling numbers up to 10. To help us add and subtract, we used pebbles and 100 squares, which made learning hands-on and engaging. The children worked hard and showed great progress in their understanding.
In our phonics lessons, we explored some Phase 4 CVCC words. The children used their knowledge of blends, digraphs, and phonemes to make word that we t with the pictures. They’ve been practicing hard, and it’s wonderful to see their confidence grow with each session.
Our topic lessons were particularly exciting as we’ve been building our pirate ships! The children had a fantastic time using their problem-solving skills, especially when our masts and crow’s nests wouldn’t stand up! With a little ingenuity, we used lollipop sticks and tape to overcome these challenges. Then, during forest school, our ships set sail! Most of them managed to stay upright and looked quite seaworthy. Although a few did topple over, we viewed this as a valuable learning experience. Next week, we’ll reflect on our designs and think about how we can improve our pirate ships.
Today was our much-anticipated school trip to the Welsh Mountain Zoo! The children had an amazing time seeing the animals, participating in an educational session about the ocean, and exploring the zoo. It was a day filled with excitement and learning. The pictures I’ve taken will be posted to Seesaw as soon as possible.
Thank you all for your continued support. Have a lovely weekend!
